PRAM Reset

How to do a PRAM reset

PRAM resets settings including sound volume, display resolution, startup-disk selection, time zone, and other related information. When you’re having issues that appear to be hardware related sometimes this reset is all that is required to fix it. Just be aware that the PRAM reset doesn’t touch any of your data or account information.

This reset is also referred to as the NVRAM Reset. It’s the same steps for all versions of Mac computers. Though if you’re having issues with a wireless keyboard you can try with a wired keyboard as it’s a lot less temperamental about when you press and hold the keys.

PRAM Reset How-To

To perform the PRAM reset:

  1. Start with the computer turned off.
  2. Press the power button.
  3. Immediately press and hold the Option, Command, “P” and “R” keys all at the same time.

The computer should show the display, make the beginning chime sound multiple times or the display may turn on and off again. It will depend on your model of Mac if it makes the chime sound. Once you have heard the chime sound multiple times or the display has turned on then off again, that means that the reset has completed successfully. Then you just release the keys and allow the computer to start up as normal and see if the issue has been resolved.

Check settings like your sound, timezone and startup disk as they are reset during the PRAM reset. Another reset that is often performed in conjunction with the PRAM reset is the SMC reset, which you can learn how to do on my SMC Reset Guide.

For more information on this reset here is the Apple support article that outlines it. https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT204063

Next Monday I’ve got an iOS tutorial on Parental Controls.  Then on Thursday there will be a Mac Troubleshooting guide on how to do an SMC reset.
